Dental Fillings in Monroe, MI
A small cavity caught early is one of the easiest things we fix. Plain process, honest answer on whether you actually need one, and you’re usually out the door inside an hour.
Straight Talk on Dental Fillings
Most patients come in for dental fillings in Monroe MI for the same reason: a spot showed up on an X-ray at their last checkup, or something started feeling sensitive when they drink cold water. Either way, it’s the most common restorative treatment we do at Frenchtown Smiles, and there’s nothing dramatic about it.
Dr. Kyle Lambert and Dr. Danevin Putrus handle fillings the same way they handle everything else here. If you need one, we’ll tell you. If a spot is small enough that we’d rather watch it for six months before drilling, we’ll tell you that too. No upselling a tooth that doesn’t need the work yet.
Fillings exist to do one job: clean out decay and seal the tooth back up before it gets worse. Done early, it’s a quick visit. Put off for two years, and that same tooth might need a crown or root canal instead. That’s the math, and we’ll lay it out plainly at your appointment.
How We Decide a Tooth Actually Needs a Filling
A cavity isn’t always obvious from looking. Some show up as dark spots on the chewing surface. Others hide between teeth and only appear on bitewing X-rays. A few announce themselves when you bite into something cold and feel a jolt you didn’t feel last month.
At your exam, we use a combination of visual check, X-rays, and sometimes a small instrument to test the enamel. If the decay has broken through the outer enamel into the softer dentin underneath, it won’t reverse on its own. That’s when a filling is the right call.
If it’s still surface-level (what we sometimes call an incipient lesion), fluoride, better brushing in that spot, and a six-month recheck might be enough. We don’t drill teeth that don’t need to be drilled. Two sets of eyes between Dr. Lambert and Dr. Putrus means borderline cases get a second look before anyone picks up an instrument.
What Composite Fillings Are Made Of and Why We Use Them
Frenchtown Smiles uses tooth-colored composite resin for fillings. It bonds directly to the tooth, matches your natural shade, and works well on front and back teeth alike. Most patients leave without anyone being able to tell which tooth was treated.
Composite has largely replaced silver amalgam in modern practices for a few practical reasons. It requires less removal of healthy tooth structure, it doesn’t expand and contract with temperature the way metal does, and it looks like a tooth instead of a dark patch when you laugh. For a molar in the back, that last part matters less. For a premolar that shows when you smile, it matters a lot.
Composite isn’t indestructible. A large filling on a tooth that takes heavy chewing force may eventually need to be replaced or upgraded to a crown. We’ll give you a realistic timeline at the visit, not a sales pitch.
If a cavity is too large for a filling to hold up long-term, we’ll say so and walk you through options like crowns and bridges instead of patching something that’s going to fail in a year.
What a Filling Appointment at Frenchtown Smiles Looks Like
Most single fillings take 30 to 45 minutes from sitting down to walking out. We start with a small amount of local anesthetic so the tooth and surrounding gum are fully numb. If you’ve never been numb for dental work before, we’ll talk you through what it feels like before we begin.
Once you’re comfortable, we remove the decayed portion of the tooth, clean the area, and place the composite material in thin layers. Each layer is cured with a small blue light that hardens the resin in seconds. We shape it to match your bite, polish it smooth, and check that everything feels right when you tap your teeth together.
You can eat as soon as the numbness wears off, usually a couple of hours. Some patients notice mild sensitivity to cold for a day or two, especially on a deeper filling. That’s normal and fades on its own. If it lingers past a week or the bite feels off, call us and we’ll get you back in for a quick adjustment.
For kids and nervous adults, we keep the room calm and explain each step before it happens. Most six-year-olds getting their first filling do better than their parents expect.
What Insurance Usually Covers for Fillings
Fillings are one of the most predictably covered procedures in dental insurance. Most PPO plans cover composite fillings at 70 to 80 percent after your deductible is met, and Healthy Kids Dental covers fillings for eligible children at no out-of-pocket cost in most cases.
Frenchtown Smiles is in-network with Delta Dental, Cigna DPPO, and Healthy Kids Dental, and we work with plenty of other PPO plans on an out-of-network basis. If you’re not sure what your plan covers, our front desk will run the numbers before you commit to anything. You’ll know the estimated patient portion before we start the work, not after.
For patients without insurance, we can talk through payment options at the visit. A single filling is one of the more affordable restorative treatments, and catching decay at the filling stage is significantly less expensive than waiting until it needs a crown or extraction. Why Catching a Cavity Early Beats Waiting It Out
Decay doesn’t stop on its own. A small cavity in March becomes a bigger cavity by October, and a tooth that needed a 40-minute filling can turn into a tooth that needs root canal therapy and a crown. Same tooth, much longer appointment, much bigger bill.
The patients who do best long-term are the ones who come in for dental cleanings and exams twice a year, get the small stuff handled early, and don’t avoid the chair when something starts to feel off. We’re not going to lecture anyone about flossing. We are going to be honest about what we see and what your options are.
If you’ve been putting off a checkup because you’re worried about what we’ll find, the kindest thing you can do for your future self is come in anyway. Worst case, you need a filling or two and we get it handled. Best case, your teeth are fine and you go back to your Saturday.
