Retainers in Monroe, MI
Finished with Invisalign or braces and ready for the part nobody talks about much? Retainers are how the work stays put.
Why Retainers Matter After Orthodontic Treatment
Retainers in Monroe MI are the quiet half of orthodontic treatment. The braces or aligners do the visible work. The retainer is what holds that work in place once your teeth are where they should be. Skip it, and teeth tend to drift back toward where they started. That’s not a sales pitch. It’s just how teeth behave.
At Frenchtown Smiles, we fit retainers for patients finishing up Invisalign with us, for patients who finished braces years ago and need a replacement, and for kids and adults who lost or broke the one they had. Same building, same front desk, same people who already know your name.
Dr. Kyle Lambert and Dr. Danevin Putrus handle retainer cases in-house. No referral across town. No starting over with a new office that doesn’t have your records.
Types of Retainers We Fit at Frenchtown Smiles
There isn’t one universal retainer. There are a few common types, and the right one depends on what your teeth did during treatment, how disciplined you want to be about wearing it, and what you’ve used before.
Clear plastic retainers (the Essix style) look a lot like Invisalign trays. They snap over your teeth, they’re nearly invisible, and most adults prefer them. They wear down over a few years and need replacing, but they’re comfortable and easy to live with. If you finished Invisalign with us, this is usually the natural next step.
Hawley retainers are the classic version: a molded acrylic plate that sits against the roof of your mouth with a thin wire across the front of your teeth. They last longer than clear retainers and can be adjusted slightly over time. Some patients prefer them for exactly that reason.
Fixed (bonded) retainers are a thin wire glued behind the lower front teeth, sometimes the upper ones too. You don’t take them out. They work quietly in the background. We’ll talk through which option fits your case at the fitting appointment, and we’ll be plain about the tradeoffs.
When You Need a Retainer and How Often to Wear It
If you’ve just finished orthodontic treatment, you need a retainer. Full stop. Teeth shift most aggressively in the first year after braces or aligners come off, and the retainer schedule is the difference between keeping your results and watching them slip.
Most patients start with full-time wear (around 22 hours a day) for the first several months, then taper to nights only. Long term, most adults wear a retainer a few nights a week indefinitely. That sounds like a lot. In practice, it’s a habit you stop noticing, like a nightguard or a pair of reading glasses on the nightstand.
If you finished braces ten years ago, lost the retainer somewhere along the way, and your teeth haven’t moved much, a new retainer can still help keep things stable. If they’ve moved noticeably, we’ll talk about whether a short course of Invisalign makes more sense before fitting a new retainer. We won’t push you toward treatment you don’t need.
What a Retainer Appointment Looks Like Here
The first visit is a quick exam and a digital scan of your teeth. No traditional impression material for most cases. The scan goes to the lab, and your retainer is typically ready within a couple of weeks. We’ll call when it’s in.
At the fitting, we check that it seats properly, doesn’t rub anywhere it shouldn’t, and that you can get it in and out without a wrestling match. We’ll walk you through cleaning it (cool water, a soft brush, no toothpaste on clear retainers because it scratches the plastic) and how to store it so the family dog doesn’t find it on the counter. That happens more than you’d think.
Follow-up is simple. If something feels off, call us. If you break it or lose it, call us. Replacement retainers don’t usually require a full new workup if your scan is recent enough, which keeps the cost and the hassle down.
Paying for a Retainer and What Insurance Usually Covers
Retainers are sometimes bundled into the cost of orthodontic treatment, and sometimes billed separately, depending on the plan and the situation. If you finished Invisalign with us, your first set of retainers is part of the treatment package. Replacements after that are billed on their own.
We’re in-network with Delta Dental, Cigna DPPO, and Healthy Kids Dental, and we work with most major PPO plans beyond that. Orthodontic benefits vary widely between plans. Some cover retainers as part of an orthodontic allowance, some don’t cover them at all once active treatment ends.
If you’re not sure what your plan covers, our front desk will run the numbers before you commit to anything. That’s true for a first retainer, a replacement, or anything else we quote. No surprises after the fact.
What a Retainer Protects Long Term
Orthodontic treatment is one of the bigger investments a family makes in dental care. A retainer is what protects that investment. Teeth have memory. They want to drift toward where they used to be, and the retainer is the gentle, nightly reminder that they don’t get to.
Patients who stay consistent with retainer wear keep their results for decades. Patients who stop wearing them after a year or two often end up back in our chair asking about Invisalign again. We see both. The first group is happier, and they spend less money over time.
If you’re in Monroe, Woodland Beach, Frenchtown Township, or anywhere in Monroe County, having your retainer handled at the same place that knows your teeth makes the whole thing easier. One office, two dentists, your records in one chart.
